PROJECT SAMPLES:

Surgeon Education

To support surgeon learners in acquiring surgical skills and techniques, I lead a team in the creation of a variety of teaching materials in order to accommodate individual learning needs.
Peruse the samples below.
Online Modules

Using a combination of text, video, animation, and interactive features, the online modules provide surgeon learners with content they need to prepare for coming to a face-to-face course. Each module features direct instruction, an interactive method for practice, and a lot of feedback.

Response to these modules has been overwhelming in terms of effectiveness, ease of use, production value, and enhanced learning.

Learning Management System

All of our online content resides within the D2L LMS behind a secure login. Within the system, surgeon learners are enrolled into particular courses, participate in a gap analysis, access pre-work modules, take assessments, and obtain post-course videos, tips and tricks, a literature library, and other resources.

Live Surgery

Shooting video in the operating room is a high-stakes and very specialized type of production. Just like a sports broadcast, if you miss the touchdown, you missed it. There's no take two - if you miss the incision, you've missed it. But the O.R. carries far more stress due to the sterile field, impeding the workflow, capturing the X-ray or endoscopic imaging, working with the O.R. staff (who are also under pressure and resent your presence), and even just obtaining credentials to gain access to the hospital. It has taken my team awhile to hone our process, but we now are known for not only our superior surgical videos for teaching, but our competence and professionalism in the O.R. theater.

Studio Production

After working several studios and not being satisfied with the results, we built our own. We have hosted talent from around the globe and shot a wide variety of content in multiple languages.

There is nothing better than shooting video in a controlled environment. In our case, the main benefit is that we can accommodate surgeons' crazy schedules and roll cameras any time day or night.

Competency-based Education

Before any media or materials can be produced, a whole process of defining surgical skill competetencies must happen. This work is done through a surgeon editorial board with my facilitation. The competencies form the foundation by which we decide WHAT to teach, HOW to teach it, and HOW to assess what has been learned. Whether it be a PowerPoint presentation, a hands-on cadaver lab, a surgeon visit, etc, all curriculum is developed with surgeon collaboration and maps back to the competencies for the surgical procedure being taught.
